What is Design Thinking

Approach to solve Problems, a methodology for problem-solving in 5 stages, if the problem has to be solved effectively then adopt the design thinking method, let’s study what is Design Thinking Course why it is so popular if interested we have given online free courses to understand Design Thinking in easy ways.

As the name suggests Design Thinking provokes thinking capacity & shows a way to solve problems in Creative & effective methodologies, here the user is treated as the subject & interactions & case studies are treated as a Problem-Solving base in simpler terms Buyers Journey could be the starting point for Design Thinking Process, which gives Thought Why, How, When with its 5 Stage Process.

Steps in the Design thinking Process

There are 5 phases in the Design Thinking Process

  • Empathize
  • Define
  • Ideate
  • Prototype
  • Test

Empathize

To Understand the User & Their Behaviour, The actual Problem is understood with the help of buyer Journey details or Buyer Persona, the main method is observing the actual interaction & the facts associated with the User, how he reacts, why he has reacted when he is reacted.

Depending on time restrictions, a significant amount of information is collected at this stage to use during the next stage and to progress the superlative possible understanding of the users, their requirements, and the problems that trigger the development of that certain product.

The process involves consulting Subject Matter Experts in collecting all possible information that is utilized in further Processes, here Actual user behavior is analyzed, and interpreted, data is collected & its base is for a further 4 steps.

This process gives deeper know-how of User Problems & a platform to collect possible information about their movements & points which motivates them to exert certain actions in Buying the Products.

 Define

This is the second step of the Design Thinking Process, in empathize stage user data is collected in various ways & actual interpretation of the Problem is made here hence word Define, here user Problem is defined.

A lot of Interactions are made by putting down facts associated with user Problems, you can even term it as Problem Statement.

When the Problem statement is known then facts for this stage are evaluated with a lot of examples & taken as data for the third stage of the Design Thinking process.

Example: Need for Changing product wrapper quality & color based on a survey conducted

How? Is the most asked question in this stage & a proper base is created with Problem definition which is further analyzed to standardize the ideate process.

Let us take an example of a Drop of Chocolate drink from a healthcare company, during empathize & define Process actual data is collected & interpreted by regular surveys & feedback collection which underlined the need of improving taste & packing, Management starting Ideating the Problem statement analyzed, we will study how it is evaluated & interpreted is studied in Ideate stage.

Ideate

The third stage of the Design Thinking Process highlights idea generation to treat problems, a solution master plan is prepared here, going back to the previous example of chocolate health drink, Management has understood the cause for fall of Product sales, first problem Taste, lot of ideas were generated to change the flavor to fruit instead of Chocolate which they thought might trigger an increase in sales, some suggested a plan to change the vendors where a company used to purchase coca(Chocolate Ingredient), include some supplements which will change the flavor to the most adorable drink.

Few suggested it could be wrong market segmentation or branding ideas, all these ideas are analyzed & interpreted to develop a piece of strong information about an actual Problem statement & next stage Prototype

Prototype

What is Prototype?  In general terms, it is nothing but a sample of your plan or ideation,

Let’s take the previous example for our understanding, Health drink was getting failed to attract users & resulted in revenue loss through Empathize, Define & Ideation stage of Design thinking company has come up with certain Prototype, for assumption sake it could be changed in Flavour from chocolate to fruity flavor, given free samples of this health drink sachets along with the purchase of their other Product s, & understood it clicked & users started liking the health drink & distributors started sending inquiries to the company here changing the flavor of the health drink worked & got clicked in the market where users started enquiring about this product which boosted idea to start up the large scale production of this Product. Health drinks is Produced & Tested to confirm the assured quality to the user & the next & final process of the Design Thinking Process is Test.

Test

In any Production Environment, before launching a Product in the market several tests are conducted so that quality is guaranteed to the customer & results in the perception of the product in better ways by the customer in inculcating brand belief ensuring customer satisfaction.

Most care is taken as it is the final stage of the Design Thinking process, all ideas & prototypes are evaluated more stringently to produce an effective product.

If in this stage Test fails then again the whole process is repeated, several tests could be conducted before launching of the product, the testing phase is frequently used to redefine one or more problems and notify the understanding of the users, the conditions of use, how individuals think, act, and how they sense it, and to empathize. Even during this phase, modifications and improvements are made to rule out problem solutions and to originate as an understanding of the product and its users as much as possible.

The Actual benefits from Design Thinking Process

In nutshell, the Design thinking process could be repetitive, bendable, and goal-oriented by the association between designers and users, with importance on fetching ideas to life-based on

How a user thinks & sense, behave in an actual situation when a product is presented to him Design Thinking handles multifaceted problems by:

  • Empathizing: Thoughtful process of understanding the human needs involved.
  • Defining: Re-aligning and describing the problem in human-centric ways.
  • Ideating: Generating numerous ideas in ideation gatherings.
  • Prototyping: Implementation of a hands-on approach in prototyping.
  • Testing: validating & developing a pattern/solution to the problem.

  8. The course gives an idea of what design thinking is, but the teacher just give 4 tools to use, and emphasize a lot that she wrote a book and that we should buy it – the book introduces 10 tools to use. Means the course is not complete, and is a way to sell the book. I already paid for the certification, I think it is unfair to ask the students to buy the book to get the complete information.
