7 QC Tools

Check Sheet:

This tool is used for data collection and analysis. Data collection is an important part of problem-solving as it is through the collected data and information that the problems could be first identified. These data could be in the form of numbers, observations, or opinions.

Fishbone Diagram:

Also known as the Cause and Effect diagram or the Ishikawa Diagram, this tool is based on finding all the possible causes to a problem and then identifying the real cause. The brainstorming technique is used for finding the causes. It also uses the 4 M or 6M criteria which includes Man, Machine, Material, Method, Measurement, and Environment, and evaluates the causes from these criteria.

Histogram:

This tool relies on pictorial representation of a set of data like a bar graph for capturing frequency distribution of data and values.

Pareto chart:

This tool follows the 80-20 rule. It prioritizes the significant problem by narrowing the problem area and suggests the measures to take. It considers that 80% of the problems are due to 20% of major causes known as the ‘Vital Few’ and likewise, 20% of problems are caused due to 80% of minor causes known as the ‘Trivial Many’. It gathers both sides information and thus analyses the issue at hand.

Control Chart:

Also known as the Shewhart Chart, it finds the source of process variation. It collects data and information to monitor the process behaviour of the set control limits. It updates about when to take the required action to eliminate common, random, or chance variations. It also notes the special cause of deviation. It keeps a check on process capability and performance.

Scatter Diagram:

It is also known as Correlation Chart, Scatter Plot, or Scatter Graph. This tool identifies the relationship between two variables or two sets of numerical data. It makes a correlation between positive and negative variables or independent and dependent variable data as represented by the x-axis and y-axis of controlled parameters.

Stratification Diagram:

This tools analyses and divides a range of data into similar groups called Strata. This tool is used when data is from a different source or condition like different shifts, machines, people, suppliers, or population groups. Sometimes it is also replaced by a Flowchart diagram.

According to Ishikawa, “as much as ninety percent of all problems within a company can be solved by means of these tools”.

As these quality tools became important in determining and solving quality problems, the need for 7 QC Tools Course also became necessary for industries trying to improve their standards.
