What is Technical Writing?

Technical Writing is another technique of writing content. It is primarily written for products and services documentation and other official documents. It is essentially written in simple language.

However, the way it is written is not in a creative way, but it is more technical. Jargon words are more used in the content. So technical writers will present the complex information of the content in a more coherent and easy to understand language and the documents are written professionally.

Besides these points mentioned in the diagram about writing effective content, writers have to provide clear and correct information about the services due for compilation. The documents can be a company’s user guides, product manuals, science papers, research and reports, white papers, case study, proposals, etc.

To write these kinds of documents writers specialized in the technical field of writing are required and preferred more than the creative content writers.

A technical writer will have to work with SMEs (Subject Matter Experts) to understand the subject better and know what important information is to be included in the content to make it more comprehensible to the end-users or target audience.

In Technical Writing creative way of writing is not required. However, a good style of writing is requisite. The content has to be engaging, coherent, and comprehensive. A strong command of the English language and grammar is of utmost importance. Before a writer writes he or she should know who would be the readers?

It has gained more popularity and people are looking for it more to take it up as a career option. It’s no longer farther behind when compared with other favored job opportunities such as Engineering, Medical, Business Management, etc.

A career in Technical Writing

A student who is interested in the field of writing and the use of the English language can make a career in Technical writing.

Certification is not mandatory, but learning the skill is important as that will help a learner to understand both the theoretical and practical aspects of technical writing. Knowledge of using all the tools required in technical writing is very important. You will learn to design layouts for brochures, create templates, video tutorials, create content guides of any tools that a company is using, and much more.

Gradually you will develop your creativity and skills, and develop an eye for detail thereby gaining a stronghold of the technical part of it that is necessary for today’s competitive market to meet the needs of the industry.

One should be up-to-date and keep abreast of all the latest technologies that keep coming up and should be ready to learn and be quick to understand how they work.

Eligibility Criteria in Technical Writing

To become a Technical writer first and foremost you have to be a graduate or get a Bachelor’s Degree in any stream.

The myth that only people from Science, Engineering, and Technology background can join technical writing is untrue. The reason being, any topic whether technical or not, can be written, published, or presented in a document technically.

For example, the topic of dating and relationships can be written in a technical way explaining all the technical aspects of love and the stages of love and how to find true love offering step-by-step solutions.

In medicine, doctors learn about the subject-matter from books written by experts. They understand the concept and all the technical processes of the diagnosis and their treatments. Then they explain to their patients a little about the diagnosis and further help them with the necessary treatments.

It is written to inform the audience on the subject-matter and outline the technicalities of the processes. So the writer is the expert and the readers are the learners.

Anyone with experience in IT, BPO, Teaching, Content Writing, Instructional Designing, Medical Transcription, etc., can learn the technical writing skills and be a technical writer as every field requires one.

Career options in Technical Writing

Learners can become a Junior Technical Writer, Senior Technical Writer, Documentation Specialist, Technical Communication Manager, Freelance Technical Writer, Technical Web writer, etc.

Salary expectations

As a fresher one can expect an annual income of ₹225,284. While a Junior Technical Writer gets an average salary of ₹516,509. Their work experience can be any number of years starting from 1 year to 5 years. And when a Technical writer has more than 6 years of experience up to 10 years, his salary would be ₹516,509. Generally, a technical writer gets a salary hike every year.

In the US Technical Writers are very well-paid. At the entry-level, a Technical Writer with little to no experience can expect to earn somewhere between $43,110 to $55,500 annually, and between $21 to $27 hourly. Those with some years of experience can expect to earn $75,500 annually and $35 hourly.

California pays the highest at $91,310 annually and $44 per hour. In Massachusetts, a technical writer would get paid $89,630 annually and $43 hourly. However, the more the income the higher the expenditures and so the cost of living.

This is the salary of a full-time employee. However, you could also find more freelance technical writing job opportunities to boost your earning potentials. One can say that in technical writing there is no limit to his or her earnings – the more you work, the more you can earn.

How to decide if Technical Writing is right for you?

Before you decide if Technical Writing is the right course for you, there is something more that you should know about Technical Writing. You will have to work on a lot of design representations, structure, and models of document presentations which requires a lot of your ideas and creativity and demand a large amount of thinking.
