My experience

I would like to share my personal experience in these lockdown times everyone has some special story to share. I saw my friend struggle with his business although all of us faced difficult times but he was running an essential commodity manufacturing factory which should not had been effected much as it never stopped working. But hats off to his experienced team of employees who adapted to the new normal very well and with their ideas pulled up the falling business back to normal. This happened only because of trained employees. In difficult times like COVID-19 they were able to transform the business because

  1. As they were equipped to face the rough weather.
  2. Tough times have more reason to utilise their resources wisely.
  3. They focused on doing things in the right manner and effectively.
  4. Used Lean and Six Sigma to design and build processes to deliver these values with a minimum of wasted effort and resources.

Difference between Six Sigma Training and Lean Six Sigma Training

Lean and Six Sigma are incomplete without each other. Both have their own unique features which need to be implemented together for better quality management production. To understand the difference between the two terms let us understand the meaning of the term Lean Six Sigma training and Six Sigma training.

#Six Sigma training

Six Sigma is a method that provides organisations tools to improve the capabilities of their business processes. It works on the principle that if you control the inputs (x) you control the outputs (y). Statistically explained y = f (x).

  1. Principle – The basic principle it works on is to view all processes that can be defined, measured, analysed, improved and controlled.
  2. Techniques- A Six Sigma trainer uses both qualitative and quantitative techniques to achieve the desired results. These tools are statistical process control (SPC), control charts, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) and process mapping.
  3. Process- The basic process is to recognise the underlying problem and stopping it with a DMAIC approach. DMAIC  is one of the tool used for long lasting solutions. The full form of DMAIC is as follows

D- define

M- measure

A-analyse

I-Improve

C- control

  • Metrics- Six Sigma quality performance means 3.4 defects per million opportunities.

# Lean Six Sigma training

As defined by ASQ (American Society for Quality)

“It is a fact based, data driven philosophy of improvement  that values defect prevention over defect detection. It drives customer satisfaction and bottom-line results by reducing variation, waste and cycle time, while promoting the use of work standardization and flow, thereby creating aj competitive advantage. It applies anywhere variation and waste exist, and every employee should be involved.”

  1. Principle – The principles of Lean Six Sigma training help to reduce or eliminate process wastes and thereby improve the efficiency and quality of the process.
  2. Process- A series of phases that organise the use of the problem-solving tools to ensure that the root causes are found.
  3. Techniques-  Analytical techniques are used to solve and identify problems.

It is very important to understand that lean Six Sigma training and Six Sigma training compliment each other. In today’s competitive business environment it is important to apply both the techniques for better quality production as

Lean Six Sigma training focuses on

 Speed

Flow

Cost

Six Sigma training focuses on

Customer Satisfaction

To sum up the difference between Sig Sigma training and Lean Six Sigma training we can say

# Different focus for problem identification

Lean Six Sigma training focuses on waste and Six Sigma training focuses on variation, any deviation from the target performance.

#Different types of tools

Lean Six Sigma training uses visual tools for both analysis and solution creation that are supported with data visualisation while Six Sigma training uses statistical tools for both analysis and solution creation.

#Different types of documentation for the solution-

In lean Six Sigma the end result is documented with a revised value stream map that changes in workflows and work instructions. In Six Sigma the end result is documented with changes in setup  processes and the control plan for monitoring the process and responding to variation .
