Learning English in China is very popular among Chinese students. And in this current pandemic when everyone is stuck indoors, the interest of learning the language is accelerating like never before. That is why the demand for teacher to teach English online and learning online is so high in this current scenario.

In China, both at the metropolitan and the provincial level are looking for an online mode of learning English. And with school activity being put on hold for the past few months have given students as well as adult with ample time to learn the language and enhance themselves even better. 

So while we are all taking measures and staying in social isolation, finding other means of employment has been the foremost thing and a priority to make ends meet, and people have to look for opportunities to work online.

With everything going on in the world, the mode of working has all transitioned to everything online, and teaching has also changed with the change in time. This has not only allowed students to learn English from home, but teachers could also teach students online in the comfort of their own home.

Requirements for all non-native speakers to teach English to Chinese students:

  1. A TEFL or TESOL certificate (120 hours course) or  2 years experience certificate 
  2. Degree certificate preferable a BA (English) Degree Certificate 
  3. In Hanan province, they are required to have a TOTA (Test of Teaching Ability) besides a TEFL or TESOL or an experience certificate to be eligible to teach there, but in other provinces, it is not required. 

Requirements for both native and non-native English teachers in China

  1. You got to have a Work Permit, Work Visa, and a Residence Permit to be authorized to teach in China but never go on a Business Visa
  2. On the work permit, it has to be mentioned that you are an English language teacher, a teacher in general, or an ESL teacher
  3. Need a clear criminal record for both native and non-native speakers

Requirements for all native speakers to teach English to Chinese students:

  1. A TEFL or TESOL certificate (120 hours course) or an experience certificate and if you have both its a benefit
  2. Must have a Bachelor’s Degree certificate

Native speakers are people from Australia, New Zealand, UK, Ireland, the United States, Canada, and South Africa

Requirements to conduct your class online:

Before you start your class it is required to find a quiet place to conduct your class so there is no hurdle for you to get the class going smoothly.

Most importantly for you to teach English online successfully, you require a good internet speed, and 10 Mbps is the advisable speed that is required for upload and download purposes. And your microphone should be of good quality so your audio is not a problem for students to hear you. Make sure its placement is intact so students find no difficulty in hearing you during the session. 

You can use a laptop, desktop, or Macbook to teach your students. However, some ESL companies specifically ask teachers to use a Laptop or a desktop to conduct classes. You can use either a Zoom or Skype account to teach your students. 

You can use any room with a white background to conduct your classes. However, if you have a separate room you could keep an interesting background drop to make the space more interesting for the students when they look at you online.

How to teach English Online to Chinese students?

Teaching English online can be challenging when compared to teaching offline especially if one is new in the job. However, everything will come with practice. Taking into account the fact that you will have students who are fast and slow learners, so you will deal with them accordingly. The goal is to make learning captivating and more fun. Few pointers to keep a note of:

  1. Kids love games and to have fun at the same time while they learn new things. So you can jump-start the class with some fun activities and make it enjoyable and entertaining for the students.
  2. In every class, it requires you to be full of energy even if you have back-to-back classes in a day; so be in your best self and bring out the personality in you.
  3. Be friendly and patient with your students and be in your best mood in most of the sessions you have with them
  4. Every day is a brand new day, so make your class interesting by bringing in more improvisation to your technique of teaching and add more creativity to it
  5. Give your student equal time for them to participate in the class so no one feels left out – and engaging them will role-play can keep them engaged and allow them to use the language to converse with their peers to get into the practice of learning and using the language often
  6. Encourage them to speak up and get to know them and engage in small talks with each one of them so you can build a bond and relationship with each of your students
  7. Your students can be children only or adults only. Let your class be fun and lively so your students enjoy attending your sessions. Don’t restrict yourself to be little fun, lively, and playful during the sessions – that is important to create a memorable and impactful session for students
  8. Preparations before the class are needed so you know what material to use for every batch of your students; you will need to incorporate your classes with pictures and videos to add some finesse to your class.
