And, although system admins are often forgotten, they play one of the most critical roles in an organization's security. From the maintenance and upkeep of servers to ensuring internal systems are secure and protected from breaches and viruses, system admins are the gatekeepers of an organization and the data within.
Since maintaining an entire IT infrastructure is not an easy feat, system administrators need to have a mixture of hard and soft skills. Here are a few skills that companies look for in system administrators. Knowledge of different operating systems (Microsoft, Unix, Linux, etc.)
The best way to gain and improve your systems administrator skills is to seek out formal education in essential computer skills such as coding, network maintenance and database management.
A system administrator likely reports to an IT department head. Unlike some IT positions, sysadmins have a unique responsibility to communicate and problem solve with colleagues both within and beyond the IT team.
A sysadmin can level up to architect expertise by pursuing both. This is especially important if you are looking to change jobs, but not companies. To be an architect, you need to have a pretty broad knowledge of technology stacks. At a minimum, I would consider networking, security, storage, and data to be essential.
There are essentially 3 pieces to IT infrastructures: infrastructure hardware, software and networking.
