What is SIFT Test?

At either a Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS) or a licenced testing facility, the SIFT exam is computer-delivered.

The three-hour testing period includes arriving at the testing location, setting up at your testing station, taking the exam, and an optional 15-minute break. Although you have three hours to finish the exam, most candidates finish earlier.

SIFT Test Layout

The SIFT is divided into 7 sections; for a detailed explanation of each section, see the table below.

There are a set number of questions and a set amount of time allotted for each of the first five sections of the SIFT (SD, HF, AAIT, SAT, and RCT).

MST and MCT, the final two SIFT sections, are computer adaptive. This implies that depending on how well you perform, the quantity and nature of the questions change.

Depending on the candidate's speed, the amount of time needed to wait in between sections, and the use of an optional exam break, the SIFT typically takes 2 to 3 hours to complete.

How many times can I take the SIFT Test?

You are no longer permitted to retake the SIFT test once you receive a passing or minimal qualifying score. Additionally, you can retake the SIFT no earlier than the 181st day after your initial attempt if you don't receive the minimum qualifying score on your first try. 

You are no longer allowed to retake the exam and are not regarded as being qualified for the Army's Aviation Program if you don't get the required minimum score on your second attempt.

How is the SIFT Scored?

The SIFT score range for test takers is 20 to 80. A minimum score of 40 is required to be considered for further aviation training.

As soon as you finish the exam, you will receive your result, whether you passed or failed. You will be instructed to watch as the test examiner or test control officer receives your score letter. For the score letter to be official and valid, the Control Officer or Examiner must sign it.

1. Prepare Diligently prior to the test

Prior to the exam, you should focus on your studies, but the night before, you should relax rather than try to cram in extra information.

2. Eat well & get enough sleep 

Prior to the exam, make sure you get about 7-8 hours of sleep. Set your alarm for a time that will allow you to prepare without being rushed. Before you leave for the test, make a wholesome meal.

3. Avoid wasting time on a single question

Avoid getting bogged down on a single issue, especially if time is of the essence. Make a note of it, continue, and if you have time, come back to it later. Sometimes the solution is obvious when you come back to a problem later.
